Knitting Tension: 17 sts x 22 rows on needle size 5 mm in stocking st = 10 x 10 cm
Rib: *K2, P2*, repeat from *-*.
Squares: 1 square = 15-17-18 (20-21-23) sts x 9-9.5-10 (11-11.5-12) cm. Work squares in colours as described in diagram.
English translations for the colors in diagram are given at the bottom of this pattern and they are given in the vertical order in which they appear in the diagram.
Back and front piece: Knitted back and forth on circular needle.
Cast on 116-120-128 (136-144-152) sts on circular needle size 3.5 mm with light brown and work 4 cm Rib. Change to needle size 5 mm, inc 4-12-16 (20-24-28) sts evenly on first row = 120-136-144 (160-168-184) sts, and work squares in stocking st as described above and in diagram (beg by arrow). Remember the knitting tension.
When piece measures 25-23-24 (26-27-28) cm work next row as follows: 30-34-36 (40-42-46) sts = front piece, 60-68-72 (80-84-92) sts = back piece, 30-34-36 (40-42-46) sts = front piece, and now complete each piece separately.
Front piece: = 30-34-36 (40-42-46) sts. When piece measures 36-38-40 (44-46-48) cm dec to shape the neckline on every other row: 10-11-11 (12-13-13) sts 1 time, 2 sts 1 time, 1 st twice. Cast off remaining sts when piece measures 40-42-44 (48-50-52) cm – adjust to a full square.
Back piece: = 60-68-72 (80-84-92) sts. When piece measures 38-40-42 (46-48-50) cm cast off the middle 26-28-28 (30-32-32) sts for neck and dec 1 st on neckline on next row. Cast off remaining sts when piece measures 40-42-44 (48-50-52) cm – adjust to a full square.
Sleeves: Cast on 32-32-32 (36-36-40) sts on double pointed needles size 3.5 mm with light brown and work 4 cm Rib. Change to needle size 5 mm and continue in stocking st, at the same time inc 2-2-2 (2-4-2) sts evenly on first round = 34-34-34 (38-40-42) sts. At the same time after Rib inc 2 sts mid under arm 9-15-17 (18-19-20) times as follows:
Size 2 years: on every 3rd and 4th round alternately
Size 3/4 + 5/6 + 7/8 + 9/10 years: on every other and 3rd round alternately
Size 11/12 years: on every 3rd round
= 52-64-68 (74-78-82) sts. When piece measures 20-22-25 (28-31-34) cm cast off 4 sts mid under arm and complete sleeve back and forth on needle. Dec each side to shape the sleeve cap on every other row: 4 sts twice. Cast off, sleeve measures approx 23-25-28 (31-34-37) cm.
Assembly: Join shoulders. Pick up approx 70-90 sts along left front piece on needle size 3.5 mm with light brown and work 3 cm Rib, cast off. Repeat along right front piece, but after 1 cm make 6-7 buttonholes evenly distributed on row. 1 buttonhole = cast off 2 sts and cast on 2 new sts on next row. Pick up approx 80-86 sts round the neck on needle size 3.5 mm with light brown and work 1.5 cm Rib, change to brown, work 1 row and cast off. Set in sleeves and sew on buttons.
