Pattern: See diagram M.1 – the entire pattern is worked in stocking st.
Note: Make sure the threads are fairly loose on WS when working pattern in several colors, otherwise they’ll felt more than the rest of the bag.
Bag: Worked back and forth on circular needle. Beg at the top on back piece.
Cast on 35 sts (includes 1 edge st each side) with tan on circular needle size 9 mm [US 13] with tan. Work stocking st. When piece measures 8 cm [3 1/8”] inc 1 st each side and repeat the inc on every 11 cm [4 3/8”] a total of 5 times = 45 sts. Insert a Marking Thread (MT) when piece measures 61 cm [24”] (bottom of bag). When piece measures 9 cm [3½”] from MT dec 1 st each side and repeat the dec on every 11 cm [4 3/8”] a total of 5 times = 35 sts. At the same time when piece measures 10 cm [4”] continue as follows: stocking st on the first 9 sts, M.1 – see above – on the next 25 sts, stocking st on the remaining 9 sts. Continue in pattern like this + the dec. Cast/bind off when piece measures 61 cm [24”] from MT.
Assembly: Sew side seams.
Shoulder strap: Pick up 8 sts on needle size 9 mm [US 13] with tan at one side of bag. Work stocking st back and forth for 100 cm [39 3/8”], cast/bind off and attach strap to the other side of bag.
Felting: Put the bag in the washing machine with a powder free of enzymes and optical bleach. Wash at 40C/ 104F without pre-wash and with normal spin. After wash shape the bag and leave to dry flat. At subsequent washes, wash the bag at a wool programme.
