KNITTING TIP: To avoid holes work YO into back of loop on return row.

CHICKEN: Worked in the round on double pointed needles.
Cast on 9 sts on needle size 3 mm / US 2or3 with 1 thread off-white Alpaca and 1 thread Kid-Silk.
ROUND 1: K all sts.
ROUND 2: * 1 YO, K1 *, repeat from *-* = 18 sts.
ROUND 3 and 4: K all sts – SEE KNITTING TIP!
ROUND 5: * 1 YO, K1 *, repeat from *-* = 36 sts.
ROUND 6 and 7: K all sts.
ROUND 8: * 1 YO, K2 *, repeat from *-* = 54 sts.
ROUND 9 to 11: K all sts.
ROUND 12: * K9, 1 YO *, repeat from *-* = 60 sts.
ROUND 13 to 20: K all sts.
Now tighten the “ball” along cast on row and fasten thread on the WS.
ROUND 21: * K8, K2 tog *, repeat from *-* = 54 sts.
ROUND 22-24: K all sts.
ROUND 25: * K1, K2 tog *, repeat from *-* = 36 sts.
ROUND 26 and 27: K all sts.
ROUND 28: K2 tog all the way round = 18 sts.
ROUND 29 and 30: K all sts.
ROUND 31: K2 tog all the way round = 9 sts.
ROUND 32: K all sts.
Cu the threads and leave approx 100 cm / 40’’ to use for crochet strap. Pull threads through remaining sts and fill chicken with cotton wool before tightening.
STRAP: Use the thread ends and crochet hook size 3 mm / C. Insert hook at the top of chicken and pull thread through, work approx 50 ch and finish with 1 sl st at the top of chicken. Cut and fasten thread.
BEAK:
Crochet with 2 threads ochre and crochet hook size 3 mm / C. Work 1 sc in the centre of the chicken’s body, then 3 ch, 1 dc in first ch, skip approx 1-1.5 cm / ½”, 1 sc in body. Turn and work 3 ch, 1 dc in first ch, go back approx 1-1.5 cm / ½’’ and work 1 sl st in the first sc.
Embroider 2 black eyes and 2 ochre feet – see picture.
