There are different terms for crocheting in British and American English.

Beret: Crochet 70 ch and form a ring with 1 sl st in 1st ch.
1st round - 3rd round: Read crochet info above. Crochet dc in every stitch around ring.
4th round: * 1 tr in 9 first dc, 2 tr in following dc *, repeat *-*.
5th round: * 1 tr in 10 first tr, 2 tr in following tr *, repeat *-*.
6th round: * 1 tr in 11 first tr, 2 tr in following tr *, repeat *-*.
7th round: * 1 tr in 12 first tr, 2 tr in following tr *, repeat *-*.
8-11th round: crochet 1 tr in every tr around without inc = 98 tr.
Put 7 marking threads with 14 tr in-between.
Continue to crochet in the round with tr, at the same time dec 1 tr left side of every marking thread every round. You can dec by skipping 1 tr on last round, or read explanation above.
Continue until 7 tr remains. Cut the thread. Sew thread through the rem sts, pull tight tog and fasten the thread.
Pompon: Make a pompon with a diameter of approx 5 cm. Fasten pompon on top of beret.
