Slip knot to begin with:
Place the short yarn end under the long end..
…and inset the crochet hook down through the loop and catch the yarn. Pull the long end through the loop and tighten.
The loop should glide effortless on the hook. This is the first st.
How to hold your crochet piece:
Pencil method:
Hold the crochet hook as if it was a pencil, in your right hand two inches from the hooked end between your right thumb and index finger and let it rest on your right hand’s index finger.

Knife Method:
Hold the hook between your thumb and index finger two inches from the hook end, resting the end of the hook against your palm place the crochet hook in your right hand as you would a knife. Place the thread over your left index finger, down into the hand and keep it in place with the help of your little finger.
