Clue #3 - 10 little clues

In clue #3 we are going to crochet a new square for the blanket. The square is not very big but we are going to make 10 of them. The diagram we will work the square from is called A.4. You will find diagrams for each step where the stitches being described are marked in red and a picture which shows how they look. If you wish to work from a tutorial video or from a complete diagram you can skip the pictures and find these at the bottom of the page.

Let’s get started!

We work 4 rounds in square A.4 with the following color combination:

CAST ON + ROUND 1: 16 lilac
ROUNDS 2 -3: 15 heather
ROUND 4: 01 white

COLOR TIPS:
Are you using a different color combination than the one we are crocheting with?
Make a small note of which color number replaces which before starting, by seeing the original materials here.

CAST ON:
Work 4 chain stitches with lilac, form them to a ring with 1 slip stitch in the first chain stitch.

ROUND 1:
Work 1 chain stitch (= 1st single crochet).

Work * 2 chain stitches, 2 single crochets around the ring *, repeat *-* 3 times in total. Work 2 chain stitches, 1 single crochet around the ring.

Finish the round with 1 slip stitch in the 1st chain stitch at the beginning of the round, do not change color.

Work 1 slip stitch around the chain-space, at the same time change to heather, read COLOR CHANGE TIP below. Cut the lilac strand.

COLOR CHANGE TIP:
To get the neatest transition when changing colors, work the last stitch before the color change in the new color.

ROUND 2:
Work 3 chain stitches (= 1st double crochet), 1 double crochet around the chain space, 2 chain stitches, 2 double crochets around the same chain-space, 1 chain stitch.

Work * 2 double crochets around the next chain-space, 2 chain stitches, 2 double crochets around the same chain-space, 1 chain stitch *, repeat *-* 3 times in total.

Finish the round with 1 slip stitch in the 3rd chain stitch at the beginning of the round.

ROUND 3:
Work 1 slip stitch around the chain-space, 3 chain stitches (=1st double crochet), 2 double crochets around the same chain-space, 2 chain stitches, 3 double crochets around the same chain-space, 1 chain stitch.

Work * 3 double crochets around the next chain-space, 2 chain stitches, 3 double crochets around the same chain-space, 1 chain stitch *, repeat *-* 3 times in total.

Finish the round with 1 slip stitch in the 3rd chain stitch at the beginning of the round, read COLOR CHANGE TIP above. Change to white and cut the heather strand

ROUND 4:
Work 1 slip stitch, read CROCHET INFO below.

CROCHET INFO:
The round starts with 1 chain stitch before the first single crochet (this chain stitch does not replace the first single crochet).

Work * 1 single crochet in each of the next 3 stitches, 2 single crochets around the chain-space, 2 chain stitches, 2 single crochets around the same chain-space, 1 single crochet in each of the next 3 stitches, 2 half double crochets around the chain stitch from the 2nd and 3rd round *, repeat *-* 4 times in total.

Finish the round with 1 slip stitch in the 1st single crochet at the beginning of the round. Cut and fasten the strands!

Finished!

Now we have finished one square A.4 which should be 8 x 8 cm / 3 1/8''.

Crochet 10 of this square - all in the same color combination as seen below:

Complete diagram for clue #3

= 4 chain stitches, form them to a ring with 1 slip stitch in the first chain stitch – see point on circle, the round starts and finishes here
= chain stitch
= slip stitch in / around stitch
= single crochet around chain-space/chain stitch ring
= single crochet in stitch
= double crochet around chain-space
= 1 half double crochet around the chain stitch from 2nd and 3rd round

Hej!

20.03.2017 - 18:01

DROPS Design answered:

Hej Anita.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused by the written instructions in English, it seems as the last 3 clues have stitch instructions that are all one stitch larger than shown in the video. Example; Double crochet written = single crochet in video?

17.03.2017 - 17:55

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Mrs Herberg, remember to change language if necessary, 1 double crochet in UK-English = 1 single crochet in US-English, read more here. Happy crocheting!

Thank you for all your work with this CAL! Question: are these little squares supposed to be square- or more star-shaped with a "waist" on each side? Not sure how tight I should make the hdc:s. Thanks!

17.03.2017 - 11:15

DROPS Design answered:

Dear Pernilla, they should look as on the picture, and each side should measure 8 cm. Happy crocheting!

Hi Alice! You must be new to crochet. Every one of those little "tails" has to be woven into the pattern and hidden. Takes a lot of time, but always worth it.
